Romeo and Juliet
All participants were given the opportunity to see Lodestar Theatre's production of Romeo and Juliet free of charge.
For those undertaking the Arts Award, this was the event on which they reported. This professional production was designed for and produced in the 'Small Concert Room' of St. George's Hall and referenced Liverpool's own 19th century gang culture in its conceptual design. See Further Resources for a download-able document exploring themes of conflict in Shakespeare's text.
Naturally the preparatory workshops involved exploration of the text in a lively and active participatory manner that allowed participants to bring aspects of Shakespeare's story into their own work and to approach and enjoy Lodestar's own production without prejudice and with a far greater understanding than if they had come to it cold. Many participants took full advantage of their free pass to the production by attending more than once, which we regard as a measure of not only the production's success but that of the entire project in enthusing young people about their cultural heritage.
